Gilgit Baltistan was previously known as the northern area of Pakistan.
It is a disputed area between Pakistan and India since 1947. Most people believe that Gilgit Baltistan got its independence on 14 August 1947 on the day of independence of Pakistan, but it is not right. It has achieved its independence on 1 November 1947.
On-demand of local people being loyal and patriotic towards Pakistan the state decided to merge with the newly born country Pakistan. So the journey starts without any identity. Till 1970, local kings were supposed to rule under the supervision of the Pakistani government. In the era of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the council of the northern area is established and Gilgit Baltistan was directly administrated by the federal government. An opportunity for the local people to govern themselves was given by the cabinet of Pakistan and later signed by President Asif Ali Zardari in 2009 and the name changed to Gilgit Baltistan from the northern area.
Now it has its legislative assembly, which is run by the elected people of Gbians.
During the visit to Gilgit Baltistan in November 2020, prime minister Imran Khan announced that Gilgit Baltistan would attain the provisional provincial status after the 2020 election of GB assembly, with a demand of the people of Gilgit Baltistan.
Some nationalists demand the status which is given to Azad Kashmir having a prime minister and proper cabinet. The flag is a symbol of representation, a mandatory icon to identify the identity, which the people of GB lacking. As the United Nations announced that Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan both are disputed areas so they will be disputed till the problem will resolve.
